Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. For many in the CrossFit community, this day holds a special significance, as it aligns with the values of respect, honor, and perseverance. At CrossFit Clemson, we believe in paying tribute to these heroes by embodying the values of courage, determination, and community in every workout.
CrossFit has strong ties to the military, with many service members integrating CrossFit workouts into their training routines. The high-intensity, functional movements prepare them for the physical demands of their duties. Moreover, CrossFit hero workouts, known as “Hero WODs,” are specifically designed to honor fallen soldiers, pushing athletes to their limits in tribute to these heroes.
Hero WODs are some of the most challenging workouts in CrossFit, created to honor the memory of fallen service members. Each workout is named after a hero and tells a story of their bravery and sacrifice. For instance, the “Murph” workout, named after Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, consists of a mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats, and another mile run—all while wearing a 20-pound vest or body armor. These workouts serve as a powerful reminder of the strength and endurance of those who served.
Here’s a list of some other well-known Hero WODs:
- “DT”
- “JT”
- “Glen”
- “The Seven”
- “Badger”
- “Holleyman”
- “Loredo”
- “Rahoi”
- “Whitten”
As Memorial Day comes to a close, let us carry forward the spirit of remembrance and gratitude instilled in us today. May the courage and sacrifice of our military heroes continue to inspire us to push beyond our limits, support one another, and strive for greatness in all that we do. At CrossFit Clemson we commit to embodying the values of strength, resilience, and community every day.
